Michael Gorman from Ireland to Kentucky
Descendants of Michael Gorman born 1827 in Ireland
Immigrant Ancestor of Thomas Francis Gorman, Jr.
Research compiled by Shannon Gorman
Michael and Bridgett Gorman were married in Ireland. They had three sons in Ireland before immigrating to the United States. Per the census records of son's Thomas and Patrick, they immigrated between 1866-1867. They were in Kentucky for the birth of their first American born child, Edward, in 1867. Michael Gorman appears to have been married twice. The 1870 and 1880 census records have two women, with different names, and birth dates listed as his wife. I do not know if the youngest child listed in the 1880 census, Mary, is the daughter of Mary or Bridgett. The boys were all sons of Bridgett.
As for where in Ireland the family originated, there are two clues. One is oral family history that states it was County Cork. The other is the census record of Patrick Gorman, which lists his birthplace as “Irish Free States”. This would indicate Northern Ireland. A possible lead for where in Ireland could be from the wife of Thomas Gorman, Ella Mooney, who states her parents are from the Irish Free States. I have not checked on the Mooney family yet.
Of the five boys born to Michael and Bridgett Gorman, John, Thomas and Edward did not have any children. Son Patrick had four children, but I have no information on their descendants. Daughter Mary did not have any children. Only Michael James Gorman has descendants listed in this compilation.
Michael James Gorman married Mary Agnus Dean and had three sons, named James Michael Gorman, John E. Gorman, and Thomas Francis Gorman, Sr.
Michael James Gorman left Kentucky and moved to Paris, Tennessee by 1910. I do not have information on the descendants of James Michael Gorman. John E. Gorman had two daughters, and one granddaughter. Thomas Francis Gorman, Sr. (still living) has four children and thirteen grandchildren.
